Here at Vinton church of christ we BELIEVE...
in simple New Testament Christianity. We do not Claim to be the only Christians, but desire to be Christians only. Our church has only One head- Jesus Christ. It is HIS church. He established the church on the Day of Pentecost. (Acts Chapter two) The keys Jesus gave to Peter at his confession in Matthew 16, was used on the Day of Pentecost. Peter preached the first gospel sermon, along with the 11 apostles. The gospel message Peter preached, is the same one we adhere to at Church of Christ, Vinton. The death, Burial and ressurection of Jesus Christ. Our obedience to that gospel results in the LORD adding us to His church. (Acts 2:42, Galatians 3:27)
The people who believed the message and responded by asking Peter and the rest of the apostles, "What should the do?" since they were responsible for Crucifying Christ. Peter responded, "Repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38)
The Holy Spirit is tied to this concrete event of obedience in baptism so we do not need question. He is in our lives. Holy Spirit guides us in studying the Word, aides us in prayer and helps us to become Christ like; the goal of every Christian.
As Jesus call us into a New Covenant relationship we obey all His commands. One of those commands is to remember Him in partaking of the communion we call, "the Lord's Supper." As the old covenant was a school-master to the new covenant, we see the temple and before it, the tabernacle, examples for us in the new covenant. The priest in the old covenant ate the bread from the table of showbread every Sabbath day in the Holy Place. The bread then was replaced with 12 fresh loaves representing the 12 tribes of Israel. It was called the "bread of presence." Jesus referred to Himself as the bread from Heaven. So, according to Acts 20:7, the early church broke this bread on the first day of the week (Sunday). From the example in the old covenant and the example of the early church, we offer the "Lord's Supper' every Sunday. We see a connection to Jesus as we remember Him. Without Him in our lives, we would be lost.
According to I Peter 2:9 - every Christian serves as a priest in the New Covenant."
We believe in the infallibility of God's Word (II Timothy 3:16, 17). And to that end, we dedicate ourselves to continually study the Word of God daily, and make it our aim to please Him, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
